TABI-1800 Deployed for 2015 Wildfire and Hotspot Mapping Season

Calgary, July 8, 2015 – ITRES and Geodesy crews have been deployed to Northern Alberta to provide rapid response high altitude thermal infrared wildfire mapping services.

Within 24 hours of receiving the order to deploy from Calgary, the TABI-1800 was in the northern half of the province and imaging active fires starting at dusk. Georeferenced and analyzed regional map products are being delivered by 6am following the night time data collection to assist ground teams in understanding the changing characteristics of the fire towards their assignment of air and ground fire suppression crews.

The ability of the TABI-1800 to fly above cloud and smoke tops at high speed while imaging the fire below enables fast, wide area coverage and downstream end product turnaround. Fire perimeter mapping is being conducted at high altitudes and fast ground speeds while achieving 500-700 sq km of coverage per evening mission.

Capable of imaging through thick smoke, possessing high thermal resolution, and able to be flown at fast ground speeds, the TABI-1800 is used to map large-scale active fires each evening. Its data is processed, analyzed, and used to deliver fully-calibrated, precision georeferenced, and orthocorrected maps early the following morning. These maps show the active fire perimeter or residual hot spots. Both products assist wildfire managers to effectively direct ground and air resources in their fire suppression and mop-up efforts.
