ITRES Begins Second Season of Wildfire Hotspot Mapping Using TABI-1800

Calgary, June 27, 2012 – ITRES crews returned from their first fire mapping operations of the season conducted for Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development (ESRD). Utilizing the commercial airborne TABI-1800 thermal mapper, ITRES and Geodesy Remote Sensing Inc. have again been contracted to provide wildfire and hotspot mapping services in support of ESRD’s 2012 provincial wildfire management efforts.

The ITRES/Geodesy fire mapping team was first pressed into service last summer to map the changing fire front and map residual hotspots for a large wildfire in the province’s north near Ft. McMurray. Success in these continuous operations has led to the TABI again seeing its first field operation of 2012. Airborne infrared mapping operations were conducted over multiple, dispersed locations across Alberta’s North, including a search for residual hotspots in the areas around Slave Lake.

Capable of imaging through thick smoke, possessing high thermal resolution, and able to be flown at high ground speeds, the TABI-1800 is used to map large-scale active fires each evening. Its data is processed, analyzed, and used to deliver fully-calibrated, precision georeferenced, and orthocorrected maps early the following morning. These maps show the active fire perimeter or residual hot spots. Both products assist wildfire managers to effectively direct ground and air resources in their fire suppression and mop-up efforts.
